OpenAI Wants Everyone to Build Their Own Version of ChatGPT

During OpenAI's inaugural developer conference, the masterminds behind the revolutionary ChatGPT unveiled a set of groundbreaking tools, empowering everyone to craft their personalized chatbot or AI agent without the need for coding expertise.

The versatility of ChatGPT has already captivated users, demonstrating its prowess in tasks ranging from composing college essays to generating functional computer programs and extracting information from the vast expanse of the internet.

In a bid to amplify ChatGPT's capabilities, OpenAI is now democratizing the process, enabling individuals to fashion tailored chatbots tailored to address specific challenges or cater to personal interests—whether it's assisting someone in learning the intricacies of a board game, aiding children with math, or even creating AI-generated art for stickers.

Constructing these bespoke chatbots, referred to as "GPTs" by OpenAI, has been simplified to a conversational interaction with ChatGPT. Users articulate their desired bot functionalities, and behind the scenes, ChatGPT seamlessly generates the necessary code to bring the envisioned bot to life. These GPTs can seamlessly integrate with various platforms, allowing them to access databases, search emails, and automate ecommerce orders.

OpenAI envisions GPTs as a novel approach for individuals to enhance the utility of ChatGPT in their daily lives, whether it's for specific tasks at work, home, or elsewhere. To facilitate this, OpenAI will launch an online chatbot store where users can discover GPTs created by "verified builders" endorsed by the company.

In a move that adds an entrepreneurial flair to the mix, OpenAI allows chatbot creators to monetize their creations by charging users for access to their GPTs. Starting today, subscribers to Plus or Enterprise ChatGPT plans gain immediate access to start crafting their personalized chatbots. Notably, companies such as Amgen, Bain, and Square have already embraced and implemented GPTs within their internal operations.

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, enthusiastically shared the news at the OpenAI DevDay in San Francisco, stating, "You can build a GPT—a customized version of ChatGPT—for almost anything. Because they combine instructions, expanded knowledge, and actions, they can be more helpful to you."

With over 2 million developers and a staggering 92 percent of Fortune 500 companies leveraging OpenAI's APIs, which grant access to ChatGPT and its underlying text- and image-generating technology, the impact of ChatGPT has been nothing short of transformative. Boasting around 100 million weekly active users, ChatGPT has solidified OpenAI's position as the world's foremost and widely-used AI platform.

Reflecting on the year since ChatGPT's launch, Altman remarked, "About a year ago, we shipped ChatGPT as a low-key research preview—and that went pretty well. OpenAI is the most advanced and widely-used AI platform in the world now."

OpenAI's latest stride in introducing custom chatbot features has the potential to propel them even further ahead of their AI competitors. Kanjun Qiu, CEO of Imbue, a startup dedicated to creating safer and more capable AI agents, lauds OpenAI's strategic move. Qiu emphasizes that for chatbots to become more potent, they must evolve beyond mere conversational abilities to take actionable steps. However, acknowledging the current limitations of AI models in reasoning, she underscores the importance of ongoing progress in both areas to inch closer to the development of 'true' agents with reliable capabilities.
